From National Parent Teacher Association The Education Trust (Ed Trust) released its newest report around representation in school curriculum. Recently, states across the country have introduced bills to limit the discussion of race, gender, sexuality and systemic inequalities in K-12 education. These restrictions include book bans and censorship, affecting all students' emotional, social and academic well-being.The newest report, "The Search for More Complex Racial and Ethnic Representation in Grade School Books," examines racial and ethnic representation in books used throughout the U.S. curricula. The report finds that white authors are far more numerous than characters and authors of other ethnicities and races. Additionally, when curriculums include people of color, they are portrayed in harmful and limited ways. This negative representation in curricular materials affects student performance and engagement.
